Obituary for Mary Careri (Tucci)

Mary (Tucci) Careri, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, died peacefully at age 93 in East Meadow, NY on Saturday, March 31, 2018. Mary is survived by her loving husband, Joseph Careri, age 94, her two children, Catherine (Careri) Lowe (Gene Lowe) and Jerry Careri, and her two grandchildren, Susan Lowe (John Armour) and Gregory Lowe, as well as many other extended family members. Mary and Joseph recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, a journey that began in 1947 with marriage at Our Lady of Sorrows in Corona, NY, followed by a reception at Community Gardens in Queens Village.

Mary was born in Manhattan, NY on December 7, 1924 to Rose and James Tucci. The second youngest in a family of 11 children, Mary often preferred to observe rather than be at the center of attention—at times she was a woman of relatively few words, but when those words came, they were often filled with a biting wit that belied Mary's sweet demeanor. She was an outstanding cook, much to the delight of her husband, children, and grandchildren, who will never quite be able to replicate her delicious meatballs and "gravy." Mary enjoyed singing and always felt it was important to look her best—though despite her beauty, she often shied away from being photographed. Educated in dressmaking during her youth, Mary often made her own clothes as a young adult, and continued to dress fashionably throughout her whole life. Mary was known by all as a kind, funny, and unselfish person, and we will all miss her terribly. We take consolation in the fact that during her final days, Mary was closely surrounded by her family, who did their very best to show Mary how very loved she is. Rest in peace, sweet Mary.

A wake is scheduled for Tuesday, April 3, 2-4pm and 7-9pm, at Leo F. Kearns Funeral Home in East Meadow. A short religious service is scheduled for 10am on Wednesday April 4, followed by burial at Calverton National Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary's life.
