Dorothy B. Dobbins, 90, of Richmond Hill, NY, passed away on April 3, 2021. She was born to parents Anna B. and Henry B. Markiewicz, in Brooklyn, NY.
She attended St. John Cantius Parochial School and Franklin K. Lane High School.
Dorothy met her husband, Cecil Dobbins, through mutual friends. They were set up on a blind date and met at a movie theater in downtown Brooklyn. She couldn’t believe he had red hair when she met him! They were married at St. John Cantius Church in Brooklyn, NY. Together they had four children, Andrea, Patricia, Todd & Katherine.
Dorothy worked as a Directory Assistance Telephone Operator. After 30+ years of service at NY Telephone & Verizon, she retired. She was a fabulous wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was extremely close to her parents Anna and Henry, and grandparents, Bertha and John. When she was young, her Uncle Joe lived with her and her mom. When she was a teenager, she wanted to become a stock car racer. During her summers, she visited her Uncle Ed, who worked at a car dealership in Florida. He arranged for her drive a different car off the lot each day. Mom loved to drive and visit family and friends. Her constant companion was her beloved Aunt Mary. They enjoyed traveling to the Atlantic City casinos and spending free time together.
Over the years, she took her children to North Carolina during the summer to keep in touch with their dad’s family. She also traveled with her children and grandchildren to Maine, Cape Cod, Florida, Nevada and California. Her siblings and Aunt Mary frequently accompanied her on these trips.
Dorothy was a great cook and baker. She made the best pork chop casserole, lasagna, golabki and pineapple upside down cake. Mom cherished her Polish heritage and shared her holiday recipes and traditions with her family. She enjoyed watching Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Law & Order SVU & Blue Bloods.
Dorothy is survived by Andrea, her daughter, and her husband, Wayne, by Todd, her son and Katherine, her daughter. She is also survived by Benjamin, her grandson, Lauren, her granddaughter and Joseph her husband, and Halina, her great-granddaughter, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by Cecil, her husband, Anna & Henry, her parents, Bertha and John, her grandparents, Jeanette, her sister, Henry her brother, Alice, her sister, Mary, her aunt, Edward and Joseph, her uncles, Patricia, her daughter, Joseph and Kevin, her sons-in-law.
Dorothy will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. She was an angel!
