She was born in County Mayo, Ireland on July 19th, 1925, and raised in Shanvaghera, near Knock Shrine. She studied and practiced nursing in England for 10 years before moving to New York where she continued her education and career in nursing, with her longest tenure as an RN at St. John’s Hospital in Queens. She married Vincent Murray in 1961 and was widowed by 1971, raising her three small children on her own.
While working full time, she enrolled in Queens College and acquired a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. After retiring from nursing, she worked as a tax accountant at H&R block. After she fully retired, she enjoyed playing cards with friends, reading, keeping up on the stock market, and spending time on the North Fork, in Orient, NY with her family.
She will be remembered as being a very strong woman, enduring much throughout her life and persevering through the tough times. A devout Catholic, she relied heavily on her faith. It was not uncommon to find her praying the rosary or attending daily mass. She was a force to be reckoned with, told it like it was, had a quick wit and a risqué sense of humor (which she coyly denied).
Calling hours are Friday, June 4, from 4-8pm at Leo F. Kearns Funeral Home, 6140 Woodhaven Blvd, Rego Park, NY. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 5 at Sacred Heart Church, 8405 78th Ave. Glendale, NY. Burial will follow at Orient Central Cemetery in Orient New York.
